When you’re in the Galapagos, you will see marina iguanas, tortoises, turtles, boobies, and sea lions. All that stuff is scenic and it’s an important part of creation. But what’s special about our island tour is when Placido takes us to his property and hacks off a bunch of bananas for us; it’s the afternoon we share with him and Joseph. A flat tire in the middle of nowhere reminds us of a month ago, in Panama, where Emily and I pushed the taxi we were riding in the last fifty meters to the fuel pump. We begin to learn that much of the world isn’t as professional or sterile as home, and that’s fine. (page 36) |
